Mathematics

For the overall module for Mathematics, I had learnt fundamental mathematical principles such as basic algebra, trigonometry, properties of circles, area, volume, differentiation, integration and statistics. Besides, I was taught on how to analyze and solve problems that involves various mathematical principles and how to apply these fundamental mathematics knowledge in built environment context for my future study in architecture. Through this module, I had also developed skills in creative problem solving and how to communicate with others and work in a group.

Our first assignment was Surface Area and Volume of Solid Geometry. For this assignment, we were required to choose 9 objects in our daily lives. We were tasked to calculate the total surface area and volume of those objects and produce an A4 sized report. Then, we need to adopt suitable ratio and draw all the surface areas on an A3 size paper for each object. Through this assignment, I am able to familiarize myself with the ratio conversion and the geometry of plane and 3-D shapes. Sometimes it was hard for us since we need to think of ways on how to calculate the big objects but it was fun spending time solving mathematical problems with my group and it really improved my intra-group communication skill. Besides, I have had a better understanding on the application of fundamental mathematical principles in daily life.

For our last assignment which is Statistics, we were required to propose a specific statistical study then submit an A2 sized poster and a printed A4 sized report including all the survey forms in a group of 5 members. This assignment was quite challenging since we were required not only to design survey forms but to distribute and collect it. Then we need to apply our knowledge gained in class to analyze those statistical data and draw conclusion from the data. We were doing a study on the laptop brands preferred by Taylor’s students for a computer shop so we need to conclude our data to make it useful for the shop. Lastly, we need to make a poster and present all those statistics and charts on it to make it simple for people to read and understand.

In conclusion, I have learnt on the importance of Mathematics and it's application in our lives. Through this module I can see the close relation between mathematical knowledge and the built environment context.
